Ankle arthritis occurs when loss of cartilage causes pain and restricted motion. Non-surgical treatments include medications, bracing, physical therapy, and injections. When these methods fail to provide adequate relief, Dr. Smith specializes in surgical treatment of ankle arthritis with total ankle replacement. In addition to the ankle, many smaller joints of the foot can be affected by arthritis. The most commonly affected joints are the big toe joint and the tarsometatarsal (or “midfoot”) joints. Non-surgical treatment options include medications, orthotics and inserts (such as carbon fiber insoles), and injections. When these methods fail to provide adequate relief, there are multiple different surgical options that Dr. Smith may recommend, depending on your specific condition and lifestyle goals. Dr. Smith treats both acute injuries and chronic conditions of the Achilles tendon. Acute Achilles tendon ruptures are usually best treated with surgery, ideally within the first 1-2 weeks after injury. If you believe you have torn your Achilles tendon, do not hesitate to call for an appointment. There are multiple different types of chronic Achilles tendon conditions such as tendinosis (pain and swelling in the mid portion of the tendon) and insertional tendinopathy (degeneration and pain where the tendon attaches to the heel bone).
